Marterl

This wayside memorial (German “Marterl”) was produced using advanced 3D-printed concrete technology in collaboration with Austrian manufacture incremental3d and is fully reinforced with a continuous steel cable that is integrated directly during the printing process. The object demonstrates how digital fabrication can be applied to create durable, site-specific structures with minimal material waste.

Created in recognition of the farming generations who shaped this landscape, it also serves as a deliberate reminder of the irreversible loss of productive soil resulting from the “Ostumfahrung” (“Eastern Bypass”) near Wiener Neustadt. The memorial highlights the contrast between innovative construction methods and a broader system in which land consumption, consumerism, and short-term planning threaten natural and agricultural resources.
